Retinaldehydum, etiam aldehydum vitaminae A appellatum, derivatum retinoli post oxidationem est. Per scissionem oxidativam β-caroteni formatur. Si reducitur, retinolum (cas 68-26-8) obtineri potest; si oxidatur, acidum retinoicum (cas 302-79-4) obtineri potest. Munus acidi retinoici (nempe Vitaminae A) in morbis cutis latissimum est, sed propter irritationem localem, applicatio clinica eius quodammodo limitata est. Retinaldehydum est metabolitus intermedius acidi retinoici naturalis et similem actionem biologicam ac acidum retinoicum habet. Sed cutis multo magis tolerat acidum retinoicum.
